The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos frequently show them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to start a band."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The band are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed toughness required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

However Haim will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
