A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
